A Day in Varanasi

After our ride on the river we had breakfast at our beautiful hotel and found that because it was Sunday the market areas were closed. We decided to take a walk around our neighborhood and see what we could stir up. Before long we came upon this shop where they were making wonderful carvings. It was just a typical neighborhood a couple of blocks off of the river.

On the walls of an alleyway toward a temple on the river we found typical dried buffalo and cow dung used for fuel. Yes, those are handprints and the dung is left to dry till it falls off and is pronounced dry enough to use.
A few snacks along the side of the road.
Children usually love to pose for photos.
Water buffaloes always have the right of way in a tight alley.
A typical small vegetable market.
Holy men in their colorful robes exiting their religious building. We were allowed inside as far as the courtyard.
Horsecart transportation. We never got to try it.

That white building on the right is an open air urinal.
