Chiang Mai, Thailand

After a great 24 hours in Nong Khai it was off across the country to Chiang Mai. It's a very popular tourist destination because of the many ethnic groups in the area, the temples, and the opportunities for treking. This is a scene looking down on a food stand in the Night Market. This famous market spreads for blocks and is packed with tourists every night.
Time to shop for a bit of gold in the small Chinatown.

The King's older sister died a couple of weeks before our visit and the country was in several months of mourning. There were photos and homages to her everywhere. Sometimes a nap is good in the middle of the day. This stand was by Taepae Gate, one of the remaining gates on the wall and moat surrounding the original city. Our hotel was on the other side. There is a great market in the area on Sunday.
Playing soccer at the edge of the Wat Phra Singh temple, the most visited in Chiang Mai.
Dignitaries watching the game.
Temple in the Lanna style.

The detail in some of these temples in unbelievable.
The murals depict the Thai legend of a royal swan.

Monk's quarters.

Another tribute to the King's sister.

The buddha dates from the 1300's. Pidgeons near the moat by Taepae Gate.
